The cost of remodeling Mr. B’s Rustic Tavern in downtown Howell before it reopens this week has nearly tripled to almost a quarter-million dollars, new owner Adam Merkel said Friday.

“We’re going to be doing a little more than we thought,” Merkel said. “It’s going better than planned.”
Merkel, owner of Diamonds Steak and Seafood one block down from Mr. B's, purchased Mr. B’s on Wednesday of last week and will reopen it this Thursday. Diamonds will remain open.

The remodeling work began one day after the purchase, with Merkel expecting to spend more than a half-million dollars by the time all of the interior and exterior work is completed in early 2016.

Merkel also plans to give his new restaurant a new name next year.
“I feel it’s worth the investment,” he said. “We really want to do it right from the start."
