On tap in downtown Howell: Excitement over a new brewpub expected to open sometime this summer. Howell residents Clark and Lisa Gill began planning the business – dubbed Aberrant Ales – about two years ago, and announced recently they’ll open the brewery at 219 W. Grand River.

The 7,200-square-foot space is currently serving as a warehouse area for the neighboring Country Squire Fireplace & Lighting. “We’re excited,” said Clark Gill, noting he and his wife scouted several locations and were happy to land in the heart of the downtown area. “We couldn’t ask for a better space.”

The 10-barrel brewpub will offer a variety of flagship beer styles year round, including blond, cream, amber and pale ales, as well as an IPA and a stout, plus six rotating taps with experimental or seasonal brews.

Patrons can also choose from a menu featuring small plates, brick-oven pizzas, salads, sandwiches and snacks. The couple is also creating a unique style for the interior – a sort of rustic/industrial look – and plans a dining room and bar area along with a lounge and recreation space, but say they plan to maintain as much of the building's historic integrity as possible during extensive renovations.
