Downtown Howell named semi-finalist in Great American Main Street Award program

Winners to be announced at annual 2016 national conference

On Friday, Sept. 11, the National Main Street Center (NMSC) announced that Downtown Howell is being honored as a semi-finalist in the Great American Main Street Award program. Being named a semi-finalist puts Howell in the running when a winner is selected at the NMSC’s 2016 National Main Street Conference, which takes place this May in Milwaukee, Wis.

“It is a tremendous honor to have reached this level, considering the hundreds of communities across the country that enter this program each year,” said Cathleen Edgerly, Director of the Howell Main Street DDA. Being selected as a semi-finalist is a true testament to all of the hard work that our Main Street volunteers, businesses, and other stakeholders contribute to building Howell into great place to live and work. We could not be more pleased.”

Each year the NMSC, which is a subsidiary for the National Trust for Historic Preservation, recognizes exceptional Main Street communities whose successes serve as a model for comprehensive, preservation-based commercial district revitalization. The award-winning communities demonstrate exemplary achievement in the process of strengthening their downtowns and commercial districts based on the following selection criteria:

•    Overall strength of the Main Street in creating an exciting place to live, work, play and visit;
•    Demonstrated success of the Four-Point Approach in the community;
•    Commitment to historic preservation;
•    Active involvement of Public and Private sector;
•    Model Partnerships–Participation of multiple groups, entities and individuals who have been involved in making Main Street a great place.
