Success in downtown Howell is the direct result of years of planning and dedication ...

What really makes a great downtown? Is it the inviting restaurants and shopping? Is it a vibrant arts and cultural scene? Or is it the steady hum of economic development activity?

This past spring, Howell was named the winner of the 2018 Great American Main Street Award, a national competition that recognizes exceptional Main Street communities each year.

By winning the award, the quaint, rural community of Howell now serves as a model for comprehensive, preservation-based commercial district revitalization, and has become an example for other cities and towns across the state.

Michigan Main Street reached out to some of the residents and leaders of Howell to hear why they think Howell is a great Main Street community and what led to their success.

As you view the video above, you’ll get the chance to hear more about Howell’s journey and the winning combination that put this community on the map as one of America’s best downtowns.

MEDC facilitates the Michigan Main Street program, which assists communities interested in revitalizing and preserving their historic and commercial districts. For further information, visit: www.miplace.org/communities/mms

Howell Main St. Unveils Concept Ideas for Downtown's Future

Howell Main St. Unveils Concept Ideas for Downtown's Future

Howell Main Street Inc. and the Howell Downtown Development Authority have much to keep in mind when planning for the future, having received feedback from community members in the form of a survey and input session.

Posters, maps and sticky notes with ideas were posted all over the walls of the Meabon Room at the Howell Carnegie District Library Thursday night for Howell Main Street Inc.’s “Unveil Open House”. The display was the culmination of consultants, city leadership, Main Street and the DDA’s efforts over the course of several months in which they gleaned data and sought feedback on what the community would like to see in Downtown Howell’s future. Howell Main Street Inc. received the consultation services as a part of their win earlier this year for the National Great American Main Street Award.

Howell Main Street Seeks Input on Downtown's Future at Community Forum

Howell Main Street Seeks Input on Downtown's Future at Community Forum

Community members had the opportunity to share their thoughts on the future of Downtown Howell at an input session hosted by Howell Main Street Inc.

The forum, held at Block Brewing Company in Howell Tuesday, sought feedback from residents, developers, and property and business owners. The event was separated into two parts, the first being a presentation of results from a recent survey that also sought community members’ input on the future of Downtown Howell. Jay Schlinsog, Principal with Downtown Professionals Network, says nearly 800 people responded to the community-wide survey, offering their opinions on land uses, services and experiences that could make the region a more dynamic area.

Community Survey for Future of Downtown Howell

Howell Main Street Inc. has kicked off a 6 month Future of Downtown Development technical service, fully funded through Main Street America and the Michigan Main Street Center.
As part of this service, the project team and Downtown Professional Network consultants have put together a survey to help us a feel for what the community overall is open to and would like to see as our downtown district continues to grow and thrive. Please take a few moments to complete the following survey at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/howell-mi

PLEASE NOTE: None of these projects are in the pipeline to take place in our Howell. This is simply to help the Main Street consultants gauge what types of designs and businesses you think would be a good fit for our downtown's future. Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey and feel free to share with others!

After collecting survey responses later this month, Howell Main Street Inc. will hold a couple of public input sessions, and we would love to have you join us! Sessions will be held on the following dates:

Downtown Futures Community Input Forum - Tuesday, October 30th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Block Brewing Company
Futures Reveal and Open House Event - Thursday, November 1 from 4:00-7;00 p.m. in the Meabon Room at the Howell Carnegie District Library
