When new downtown Howell shop owner Katelyn Lyders stepped into wholesale home marketplace AmericasMart Atlanta, she felt like she was in heaven.

"There were hundreds of vendors and it was one of the best experiences I've had," Lyders, 24, of Brighton Township, said.

She stocked up on antique and one-of-a-kind furniture, home accent pieces and other home decor from vendors at the Atlanta market.

Her finds there are among a wide range of old and new home decor and gift items she will be selling at Sage and Slate, which she plans to open this spring at 120 S. Walnut St.

Howell Main St. Unveils Concept Ideas for Downtown's Future

Howell Main Street Inc. and the Howell Downtown Development Authority have much to keep in mind when planning for the future, having received feedback from community members in the form of a survey and input session.

Posters, maps and sticky notes with ideas were posted all over the walls of the Meabon Room at the Howell Carnegie District Library Thursday night for Howell Main Street Inc.’s “Unveil Open House”. The display was the culmination of consultants, city leadership, Main Street and the DDA’s efforts over the course of several months in which they gleaned data and sought feedback on what the community would like to see in Downtown Howell’s future. Howell Main Street Inc. received the consultation services as a part of their win earlier this year for the National Great American Main Street Award.

Specialty retail store in downtown Howell closing as owners retire

Specialty retail store in downtown Howell closing as owners retire

While shopkeepers Donna and Tim Hostetler have had a good experience owning their rustic home decor shop Up North Decor, they said the time has come to close up and retire.

The downtown Howell shop at 113 East Grand River Ave. will close before the end of December.

The Hostetlers hope holiday shoppers will clean them out of inventory first.

"We're going to try to have the store open until just before Christmas," Tim Hostetler, a 67-year-old Howell resident, said. "Our lease runs out at the end of December ... so, the week after Christmas, we'd be taking care of anything in the store to close and have it ready for (building owners) to lease it."

Two new hidden murals in Howell feature gangsters, opera themes

Two new hidden murals in Howell feature gangsters, opera themes

Two new murals are "hidden" in Howell, slightly off the beaten path.
The artworks are outside for easy access, but both are located behind buildings, in alleyways.
They both also feature historic scenes – one from the 1920s and the other from the late 1800s.
Artist Stacy Karnes and his assistant, Kelly Beacome, completed their painting of a “1920s speak easy street scape” on Tuesday, about 15 days after they began. The mural graces two walls of the building that houses 2FOG's Pub. However, much like first-time patrons of the pub, art aficionados may also pass the building located at 118 West Grand River without knowing the entrance, and now the painting, is behind it.
